About the COHJS

The Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society was formed in 1981 with the mission to preserve, perpetuate, promote, and encourage the performance of Classic/Traditional Jazz music; to secure greater recognition and encouragement of jazz musicians performing in this form of expression; to nurture the growth and appreciation of this music as the uniquely original American artform that it is; and to connect this music to younger generations and thereby promote a recognition of it as a fundamental part of their true musical heritage.

We present about 4 to 6 concerts each year with 'Our Kind of Music' (OKOM) for our members and the community to enjoy.  Concerts generally take place on Sunday afternoons at the Makoy Center in Hilliard, Ohio just west of Columbus.  Seating is available in rows of chairs or at tables, and a portion of the beautiful dance floor is available to dancers.  Food and refreshments are available for sale.

What kind of music?
Our concerts are generally of music from the late 1800s through the 1940s in America.  Styles go by the names of Hot Jazz, Trad Jazz, Ragtime, Dixieland and others.  Some of our favorite musicians and composers include Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagie Carmichael, Louis Armstrong, Joe "King" Oliver, Scott Joplin, just to name a few.  We love happy, toe-tappin', knee slappin', hand clappin', rag wavin', good time music!
